About SAM

We Fight With You

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Smile-A-Mile is committed to serving families in Alabama who are on the childhood cancer journey by being with them through diagnosis, during treatment and in the years beyond. We provide year-round programs for patients and their families with the motto “We Fight With You”. Smile-A-Mile’s mission is to ensure these families will never fight this disease alone.

How We Fight

How We Fight

Hospital Outreach Program (HOP): HOP takes weekly activities to children and families being treated at Children’s of Alabama.

Programs at Smile-A-Mile (SAM) Place: Our programs foster emotional and psychological healing for children and their families at all stages of the childhood cancer journey.

Camps and Retreats: We provide five sessions each year tailored to age and stage of treatment.

Regional Programs: We are committed to serving families by providing programming in their own communities throughout Alabama.

Scholarships: Smile-A-Mile created a scholarship program in 1999 to assist families in sending their child to college, university, or trade school. Scholarship recipients must show academic progress as well as continue to give back to the organization by volunteering at fundraising events. Since 1999, Smile-A-Mile has provided more than $1,000,000 in scholarships.

Bereavement Programming: We are dedicated to continuing support for bereaved families through year-round programming, remembrance ceremonies and keepsakes which serve as tangible reminders of their children.

Funding a Fellow: Smile-A-Mile is a longtime partner with Children’s of Alabama and provides annual funding for a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellow in training with the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. This funding is offered exclusively for the training of Post-Graduate Fellows in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
