My SAM Story

Last summer, I began my Smile-A-Mile story at teen camp as a first-time counselor. I was unbelievably nervous but my fears instantly faded away as the campers stepped off the bus. I was truly inspired each day by the unwavering energy, passion and excitement of the campers and volunteers. Everyone had a special kindness and openness toward each other that encouraged new friendships to form and life-long friendships to flourish. By the end of camp, I felt like a part of the SAM family and was looking forward to my next opportunity to get involved.
I am currently a senior at The University of Alabama studying Child Life and Early Childhood Education. Senior year was quickly proving that “adult-ing” was harder than I thought and life is full of uncertainties. I was thrilled the day my advisor informed me that Smile-A-Mile was offering an internship. My experience at camp showed me that this is an organization unlike any other and I was certain I wanted to be a part of it. Smile-A-Mile is run like a family that fosters courage, strength, and pure dedication to serving others. As an intern this semester, I am so blessed that I can continue my involvement and learn from a team that will instill values I hope to carry with me for a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this semester has in store!”
