My SAM Story

Rhett

I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when I was 7 years old. My parents hid the Smile-A-Mile registration information from me that first year. The next year I waited for the mail every day to make sure I didn’t miss it. Once I was able to go to camp for the first time, I never missed a summer. I was off therapy when I started at camp, but when I relapsed my doctors wouldn’t let me miss a minute of the fun!
In 2001, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to volunteer and start to help kids that were going through the same things I did. I have made many memories and developed friendships over the years that have stood the test of time. I even met my best friend, Sarah, who eventually became my wife. Camp is an integral part of my life. It’s great to be able to come back whenever I can and give back to a great organization that has invested so much in me.
