My SAM Story

Four years ago, I crossed paths with a Smile-A-Mile board member and decided I needed to get involved. Having just received news about my friend and co-worker’s toddler being diagnosed with childhood cancer, I felt this was a small way I could help.

I joined the Junior Board and got to visit my first camp session. I was blown away at the impact that this organization made on kids and their families. I was more blown away by the strength and compassion of this incredible staff and fleet of volunteers. Not long after joining the Junior Board, I learned from Bruce, the Executive Director, that Smile-A-Mile had a vision to have its own place. I was beyond thrilled that he wanted my company, BL Harbert International, to help make this vision a reality.

Tears of joy filled my eyes as scissors cut the red ribbon for the grand opening of Smile-A-Mile Place earlier with year. Only steps away from Children’s Hospital, families now have a place to escape the sounds of beeping hospital equipment. Children have a place to play and forget about treatments and just be kids. The staff now has more space to expand their programs.

This year I am a VP for the Monkey C Monkey Run 5K on September 16th. This is the first year the race route will be downtown and start and finish at the new Smile-A-Mile Place. Runners will get to run past Children’s Hospital and wave to the kids on the oncology unit. I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd in this new race location. It’s going to be awesome! I hope to see you all at the start line!
