Hope is Never Cancelled

While the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect our community, it will not stop Smile-A-Mile from carrying out our mission of providing hope to families on the childhood cancer journey. We are continuing to provide support to our families and to the medical staff at Children’s of Alabama through virtual programming, care packages and meals for those on the front lines. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see the ways we are providing hope during this time.

If you would like to support our efforts during this time, please contact us. You can also make an online donation or mail a check to our office – 1600 2nd Ave S Birmingham, AL 35233. We appreciate your support!

“SAM at Home” – Ongoing Virtual Programming
We love seeing our families and staying connected! We’re excited to bring “SAM at Home” through virtual programs for youth, teens, families, moms and volunteers. We are committed to still walking out our mission and thinking outside the box to make it happen!

If you are interested in participating and have not heard from us, please text SAM at 205.323.8427.

Appreciation for Our Heroes – Ongoing Support for Children’s of Alabama Staff
“It is in difficult times the world recognizes who the real heroes are, but you’ve always been heroes to us!” We are honored to be able to provide meals to staff members at Children’s of Alabama as a way of thanking each one of them for being on the front lines. This also gives us opportunities to support local businesses who have supported us.

Special Announcements

March 19, 2020
A special message from our CEO, Bruce Hooper. HOPE WILL NEVER BE CANCELLED!

March 12, 2020
Considering the recent concerns and measures taken across the United States to combat COVID-19, the staff at Smile-A-Mile is monitoring and will continue to seek advice and direction from our trusted medical team and partners at Children’s of Alabama as it relates to our programming. Additionally, we are monitoring the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). It is, and will remain, our goal to ensure the safest environment possible for our participants, families, volunteers and employees. We are committed to maintaining best practices to reduce risk of all communicable illness, included COVID-19.

At this time and at the direction of the Children’s of Alabama Oncology Division leadership, we have made the informed yet difficult decision to cancel On-Therapy Family Camp April 24-26, 2020. Additionally, we will be cancelling all other group activities at SAM Place for the next four weeks. We will be assessing and revamping ways to continue to walk out our mission during this time, it may just look a little different. We know you all are dealing with changes brought about by the measures taken to stop the spread of this virus and thank you for your understanding and flexibility.

We will continue to rely on the direction and expertise of our medical support team and should it become necessary to cancel additional programming past this initial four weeks, we will do so in the best interest of all those affiliated with Smile-A-Mile. As always, the health, safety and well-being of all of our Smile-A-Mile Family is our paramount concern. We will continue to monitor this quickly evolving situation and keep you updated.

Please email Bruce@smileamile.com or Kellie@smileamile.com if you have any questions. Thank you for your understanding and support.
